Phone Calls

The "Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S.A." (ETECSA) (in English: Telecommunications Company of Cuba) is the government-owned service provider for the entire country. Their services include: Telephone, Internet and Wireless Internet (through their NAUTA branch), and Mobile Phone (through their CUBACEL branch).

Pre-paid calling card CubaTourists can make phone calls from their hotel (charge to the room) at a cost of about 2-3 CUC per minute. But the most economical way is to use the public phones with prepaid calling cards, called "Propia". You can buy these cards in every hotel in Cayo Santa Maria, ETECSA offices, airports, post offices, and commercial centers. They come in denominations of 5 and 10 CUC. They can be used in the blue public phones (the ones with the slot for the CUC prepaid cards) to make calls within Cuba or overseas. When you insert the card the remaining value is displayed and you can see it decrease as the call goes on. For more information on public phones and Propia cards, visit the following page of ETECSA website: www.etecsa.cu/telefonia_publica/

Here are the rates(*) when using a Pre-Paid Calling Card in a public phone:
• Call within Cuba: 0.05 to 1.00 CUC per minute (depending on zone)
• International call (all countries): 1.00 CUC per minute
(*) Subject to change, please check the ETECSA website (www.etecsa.cu/telefonia_publica/tarifas/)

There are two other types of public phones which are mainly used by the Cubans: The ones that accept pre-paid calling card paid in CUP (moneda nacional), these are for local calls and long-distance calls within Cuba; and the public phones that accept pesos coins only (CUP), these are for local calls only.

Canada Direct Service

ETECSA provides a toll-free number 0800-CANDA (0800-22632) to Canadians who want to make a phone call from Cuba to Canada (or any other country) and have the call charged to their own phone account in Canada.

Mobile telephony (cellphone)

Tourists and foreigners can use their cellphone in Cuba, with their own number, via the Cubacel network. ETECSA (Cubacel) has roaming agreements with hundreds of mobile carriers from more than 160 countries (listed in their website: www.etecsa.cu/telefonia_movil/roaming/).

The service is 900 MHz (GSM and 3G) on the entire Cuban territory, and is available in roaming service only on the northern coast of the country (such as: Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Ensenachos, Cayo Las Brujas, Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, Havana, Varadero) and in provincial capitals. They also have a GSM 850 Mhz access with limited coverage in: Havana, Varadero, Ciego de Avila, Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, Holguin (Guardalavaca and airport).

You can rent a cellphone in Cuba, or activate a prepaid temporary line with Cubacel to use your own phone.
