The initial project of the Barcelo Cayo Santa Maria was four hotels, the Beach, Colonial, Caribe and Tropical for a total of 2.694 rooms. It would have been the largest resort in Cuba. In 2011, the Beach and Colonial sectors have merged under the same name ... Barcelo Cayo Santa Maria Beach Colonial.
The Caribe and Tropical sectors are no longer under the Barcelo banner, but administered by the new Canadian Blue Diamond Hotels & Resorts group (a division of Sunwing Travel Group) under the name of Memories Paraiso Beach Resort (formerly the Caribe sector) and the Memories Azul Beach Resort (formerly the Tropical sector).
The Memories Paraiso Beach Resort opened its doors in November 2010 with 666 (all junior suites like in the Barcelo), located east of the small town called « Pueblo La Estrella ». The Memories Azul Beach Resort hotel opened its doors in December 2011. Both hotels have a total of 1.386 rooms.
As these hotels are managed by the Blue Diamond hotel group, they are exclusive to Sunwing tour operator (for Canadian customers). Many categories of rooms are available with excellent sea views (3-storey buildings). For a supplement, it is possible to join the Diamond Club, which includes several services, like exclusive access to the a la carte restaurants, personalized check-in, distinctive bracelet, late check-out, exclusive beach area, and many more. The Memories hotels offer the « stay at 1 play at 2! » which means you may use all facilities of the Memories Paraiso Beach Resort AND the Memories Azul Beach Resort. Both hotels are 4½-stars and are located near the Pueblo La Estrella.
PLEASE NOTE, there is no shared services between the Memories hotels and the Barcelo Cayo Santa Maria Beach Colonial as well as all the other hotels in Cayo Santa Maria.
Memories hotels are located in the eastern end of Cayo Santa Maria (Playa Santa Maria) with over six kilometers of fine white sandy beach, ideal for walking. Besides, all hotels in Cayo Santa Maria are located on this sector of the beach. There is a hotel being built east of the Memories Azul Beach Resort, in the sector of beach called Piedra Movida (the beach that leads to the red-roofed house (government building).
