The airport in Santa Clara and the transfer by bus towards the hotels

The airport in Santa Clara is the only one from which you can get to Cayo Santa Maria (or Cayo Ensenachos) It use to be a military airport that was converted for tourism. In fact, Cayo Santa Maria is the main touristic pole in the region of Villa Clara.

DAfter the first international flights landed in 2001, it became obvious that the installations could not cope with the rise in tourism. Therefore, the airport has been modernized in 2006. It was about time. Going through customs back then was a real challenge!

The transfer by bus to Cayo Santa Maria takes about 90 minutes. Fortunately, in the bus, a Cuban guide will enlighten you on the points of interest of the region of Villa Clara as well as the famous story of Ernesto “che” Guevara that attacked, with his rebels, a train of the army of Batista. It turned out to be a turning point for the Cuban revolution.

Some tour operators proceed to the check-in directly in the bus instead of having you wait in line at the front desk. A gesture that is quite appreciated since you can choose to go at the bar, the beach or directly to the room.

Enlarging the local airport in Las Brujas, (10 minutes from the hotels) would permit international flights to land thus, 80 minutes of transfer time would be saved. Since this zone is protected, it will not happen in the near future. Although, the government held a similar speech for Cayo Coco when the planes were landing in Ciego de Avila! And now, there is an airport in Cayo Coco. To be continued!
